Wellness Plan FAQs
Q. When and how do I sign my horse up?
A: Wellness Plans run from January 1st to December 31st of each calendar year. The sign up period for Wellness 2024 will begin on January 1st, 2024, and end on March 15th, 2024. If you are interested in Wellness for 2024, please contact Dr. Bourke by phone or email.
Q. What’s NOT included?
A: Wellness Packages do NOT include or cover services for breeding, injuries, illness, lameness, etc.
The Wellness Packages are designed to bundle all of the preventative health care needs for your horse during a given year. The goal is to reduce the risk of illness or injury through close cooperation with your veterinarian, so that additional visits or services are not necessary.
Q. Are fees for the Wellness Packages refundable or transferable?
A: If a horse on the Wellness Plan is sold or dies prior to receiving all the services included in their Wellness Package, the costs of all remaining services will be refunded. You may not, however, change your mind and decide to ‘un-enroll’ a horse once they have been enrolled for the year. Benefits of the Wellness Packages are not transferable to new owners or to horses other than the ones enrolled.
Q. Why do the younger horses need more frequent vaccines?
A: The American Association of Equine Practitioners recommends twice a year vaccination for West Nile Virus for high risk horses in Florida. The age group at highest risk are horses under 5 years of age.
Q. Can my foal be on the Wellness Plan?
A: Unfortunately, no. Foals have very different vaccination and de-worming needs, and our Wellness Plans are designed for horses over 1 year of age.
Q. Can my broodmare be on the Wellness Plan?
A: Absolutely! However, the additional vaccines and ultrasounds that pregnant mares require in order to monitor the pregnancy and decrease risk of abortion are not included in the Wellness Packages, and therefore will be billed for separately.
Q. Do I have to pay for the entire plan at the beginning of the year?
A: Yes. The enrollment period for the Wellness Program ends on March 15, 2024. Your payment is due in full either by March 15th, or at the time of your first Wellness visit, whichever is earlier in the year.
